Sifu Gim Jie Wei is a Wing Chun Sifu who has been teaching the art since 2017 and a permanent member of the Hong Kong based Ving Tsun Athletic Association (VTAA). He started his martial arts journey when he was 9 years old. The first martial art he practiced was Wushu style in his primary school. He stopped studying Wushu style after about 1.5 years because he had to transfer to another school due to his father's career. Although it was just a short period of time, he began to head his martial arts direction towards practicality instead of performance-oriented, as he was asked by one of his Kungfu brothers how to block his incoming attack. To his shock, he has no idea how to block a simple hammer fist punch towards his head. From that instance onwards, he started to drift his martial arts path from performing arts to self-defense arts.
 
At the age of 15 years old, he started his Wing Chun journey by learning the art from his uncle, Sifu Dr Yoon. He trained hard until he finished secondary school. Before he travelled to another state to pursue his Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, he had a few private lessons to sharpen his Wing Chun skills. During his university life, he has done lots of research on Wing Chun art from books and the internet. Although he did not have as much time as before, he has not stopped studying and practicing Wing Chun.
 
In 2025, he also further studied Wing Chun under a famous lineage for a period of time. Now, he is working as an engineer in a multinational corporation while part-time studying for a Master of Engineering Science, and he still teaches Wing Chun passionately under his registered "Yam Kai Wai Wing Chun Academy". His teaching focuses on the practicality and usability of Wing Chun. He believes that the application of the techniques is the most important aspect when learning the art.
